A mysterious, mysterious table because of anonymous, mysterious painter also as for its major direction.
One can date it from the years 1560-1565, around Fontainebleau. It is certainly a portrait of the lady of the years 1560, the lady of the court of Henri II, probably, Diane of Poitiers.
Diane, for the ones it is the charm made woman, it is softness, kindness, languor which characterize the woman; for others, it is the domination made woman, of almost male qualities, an influence on the beings that it côtoie. Patron and businesswoman, adored and hated, respected and adulated, it was also terribly feared.

Here thus Diane, MUSE of the painters of his time. Its portraits innovate in France the myth of the Eros of the cold beauty .

Two other versions of this table are in Worcester and Dijon . all present the same composition, the same woman with the same very round face at the same time and whose features have this something of pointed, the same hardly buckled chest, the same decoration with a maidservant leaning on a trunk.

The wedjat eye is a symbol of the falcon-headed god Horus, who gave the eye to his father Osiris and by doing so brought him back to life. In another story, the eye of Horus was injured and the time required for it to heal was likened to the cycle of the moon. The symbol may be translated as "the whole or restored one."

This novel{The Seventh Cross: A Novel from Hitler's Germany} tells the story of seven escapees from a concentration camp. While this is a work of fiction, it may still be of interest: Written in the late 30s-early 40s, and published in 1942, it was immediately translated and became a big bestseller in a number of allied countries, including the U.S. It was even printed in an "armed forces edition" for U.S. troops. An English translation with a foreword by Kurt Vonnegut and an afterword by Dorothy Rosenberg has recently been published by New York: Monthly Review Press, c1987 as part of the Voices of Resistance series.

The seventh cross (1942) relates the adventures of a survivor, a Communist, between seven men sent to a Nazi concentration camp; The deads do not age (1949) narrates the life of a group of Communists between 1918 and 1945. In 1944 it published in Mexico, in Spanish version, his novel Visa of transit , another one of his masterpieces, considered in addition like the main novel that has been written on exile. Also it wrote tests, gathered in On Tolstoi and Dostoievski (both of 1962). In 1974 their poems in a volume took shelter.

Cheer’s original, 13th-century meaning could equally suggest gloom, for it was the face itself. Via Old French chiere, it is from late Latin cara, face, itself most likely from the Greek for head.
