Thus he himself is entangled. Then the widow of Eli's brother comes up to New York from Virginia ostensibly just to visit, but, in quite genuine affection, she hopes that Eli will come back with her. She is played by Kim Basinger, tenderly convincing in this woman's pity for the life that Eli lives and in her longing for him.
